While serving as Director of Research at Health Research Institute (HRI), William J. Walsh, PhD, recognized how devastating AD and dementia can be to individuals and their families and caregivers, and began his search for biochemical causes. In 2005, with the Louisiana State University and the U.S. Department of Energy Argonne National Laboratory, Dr. Walsh found that the brain cell abnormalities seen in AD are similar to those seen in individuals with autism.
Oxidative Stress and Alzheimer’s Disease
Recent published research suggests that degenerative brain diseases are associated with oxidative stress or “free radicals” in the brain accompanied by low levels of metallothionein and glutathione or “protector proteins”. These significant markers appear to contribute to the chronic inflammation which underlies the brain cell destruction caused by AD.
Given the significant, clinical correlation of oxidative damage found in patients on the autism spectrum and those with AD or dementia, Dr. Walsh and Albert Mensah, MD, began using the successful antioxidant therapy approach found in patients with both autism and in beginning stages of AD or dementia.
Is there hope for overwhelmed families?
Since 2006, Dr. Mensah and Dr. Bowman with a multi-disciplinary clinical team have provided a specialized antioxidant treatment program for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia to counteract oxidative stress. This program involves “Metallothionein-Enhancement Therapy” which is aimed at slowing or halting the progression of the disease. Many patients with AD or dementia have reported partial return of lost memory followed by stabilization of mental functioning that has continued for more than five years. These reports have been verified by improved scores using psychometric testing, the Mini-Mental Test and computerized CANTAB testing. These early results are promising, bolstering Mensah Medical’s desire to evaluate the program for clinical efficacy.

Albert Mensah, MD
As a physician in this specialized field since 2005, Dr. Mensah, board certified in integrative pediatrics by the American Association of Integrative Medicine, has treated over 3,000 patients with advanced targeted nutrient therapy. He serves on the board at Walsh Research Institute and serves as a clinical instructor for WRI’s international doctor training programs around the world. Dr. Albert Mensah received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) and his medical degree from Finch University of Health Sciences-Chicago Medical School. Dr. Mensah’s residency was in Family Medicine at Swedish Covenant Hospital (Chicago). Following residency, he completed additional fellowship training in academic development at JHS Cook County Hospital (Chicago). From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Mensah treated patients at the former Pfeiffer Treatment Center, a not-for-profit organization and outpatient clinic specializing in the treatment of biochemical imbalances including children with autism. Prior to joining Pfeiffer, Dr. Mensah was a physician at Melrose Park Clinic in Illinois. Dr. Mensah co-founded Mensah Medical in 2008 with Dr. Judith Bowman.
